Information for First Year Double Degree Medicine Students
On this page you'll find an overview of what to expect in the first year of your degree. For a more comprehensive overview, please refer to your faculty’s handbook (always refer to your faculty's handbook when in doubt).
Starting from the 2018 DDMP cohort, there will be two available pathways:
The University of Sydney Scholar Chancellor's Award
This scholarship is awarded to domestic students who achieve an ATAR of 99.95 or equivalent (the requirement to get into the DDMP). Hence, every domestic student in the DDMP will be awarded this scholarship worth $10,000 per year of undergraduate study. This means it will only be awarded for the three years of your undergraduate science or arts degree (or four years if you wish to also study the Bachelor of Advanced Studies). Continuation of this scholarship is dependent on maintaining a Weighted Average Mark of at least 75.0 in each year of study (that is, at the Distinction level).
N.B. Fret not, since if you make the DDMP, achieving a distinction average will be fairly easy.

B Science (Medical Science)
Dalyell Scholars Program
As intelligent combined medicine students, you will no doubt be all invited to the Dalyell Scholars Program. This program allows the Faculty of Science and from 2018, the Faculty of Arts as well, to make special arrangements which offer an intellectual challenge to elite students. Each student has a mentor who will work with them to plan a year’s activities that match the student’s interests and goals, which include: special seminars, subjects from higher years, accelerated study by taking extra units or interdisciplinary studies.
The School of Maths, School of Chemistry, School of Biology also offer a Special Studies Program (SSP). The Chemistry and Biology SSP involve different laboratory sessions to the advanced streams, where more interesting and challenging experiments are carried out. The Maths SSP is an extra one hour seminar every week which cover four interesting areas of maths over each semester. Marks from the assignments from the lesson will ‘top up’ your normal maths subject mark.
B Arts
Compulsory Zero Credit Point Subject for Double Degree Medicine
One zero credit point subject (SMTP3007) must be completed before the end of your first degree. This can either be
First Year Representatives
In March, COMA will be holding a General Meeting in which First Year Representatives will be elected. The First Year Representatives liaise between the first year cohort and the general COMA society, publicise the society’s activities to first year students, and put forward any suggestions or feedback to benefit members. Keep an eye out for more info regarding nominations in an email closer to the date!

- The course is very flexible, in that students are able to select electives from other faculties (e.g. Arts, Economics and Business, IT etc) in up to 12 credit points over the year
B Science (Medical Science)
- Refer to the Science handbook for further information.
- Due to changes in the 2018 curriculum, Medical Science is no longer a standalone degree, but is conferred as a stream within the Bachelor of Science.
